The Detour

A what-in-the-living-hell-is-wrong-with-this-family comedy created by comic super-couple Jason Jones & Samantha Bee and inspired by their own experiences with family trips. Unfiltered dad Nate hits the road with wife Robin and kids Delilah and Jared. Every leg of their trip is fraught with disaster as they encounter one hellish turn after another. If there's trouble on the road, this family will find it and plow into it.

The Detour (2016-2019) is a American adult single-camera family sitcom created by Samantha Bee and Jason Jones for TBS. Jason Jones plays Nate, an unfiltered dad who hits the road with his wife Robin (Natalie Zea) and their kids Jared (Liam Carroll) and Delilah (Ashley Gerasimovich). Their engine is simple and relentless: a family vacation meant to bring them together, and every stop they make turns into another hellish mishap, with the parents' bad judgment and the children's raw reactions colliding at each turn. Each episode is a self-contained trip leg, so the show plays as a case of the week built around the same four people across four seasons and forty-two episodes of roadside chaos. The series is grounded in the creators' own experiences with family travel, which gives its awkwardness a sharp, lived-in edge. Its tone is raunchy, irreverent and cringe-prone, with a deadpan streak that keeps the humiliations feeling more affectionate than cruel. Fans of Arrested Development, Vacation and Modern Family will find resonance in its dysfunctional family energy and sharp, unfiltered humor, though its brashness is all its own.

Audiences rate The Detour positively as a raunchy, chaotic family road-trip sitcom whose cringe-inducing disasters land with a sharp, irreverent edge.
