Gunbuster

In the near future, humanity has taken its first steps towards journeying into the far reaches of the galaxy. Upon doing so they discover a huge race of insectoid aliens known as "Space Monsters." These aliens seem dedicated to the eradication of mankind as they near closer and closer to discovering Earth. In response, humanity develops giant fighting robots piloted by hand-picked youth from around the world. Shortly after the discovery of the aliens, Noriko Takaya, the daughter of a famous deceased space captain, enters a training school despite her questionable talents as a pilot. There, she meets her polar opposite, the beautiful and talented Kazumi Amano, and is unexpectedly made to work together with her as they attempt to overcome the trauma of war as well as their own emotions.

Gunbuster (1988-2006) is a Japanese original video animation mecha series produced by GAINAX and Studio Fantasia, presented as a two-season, twelve-episode anime. Set in a near future where humanity first pushes into deep space, the story follows Noriko Takaya (voiced by Noriko Hidaka), the clumsy daughter of a famous deceased captain who enrolls in a pilot academy despite doubts about her talent. Her gifted and polished rival Kazumi Amano (Rei Sakuma) is unexpectedly made her partner, and the two must learn to fight together as they confront giant fighting robots built to repel a huge race of insectoid Space Monsters closing in on Earth. Each episode blends training drills, pilot rivalry, and fierce space battles with the weight of distance and sacrifice, since travel between battles stretches time and separates the pilots from home. The tone is earnest and emotionally raw, with war trauma and self-doubt surfacing beneath the spectacle. Its flashy, exaggerated mecha action and sincere coming of age arc make it a fitting pick for fans of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Macross, and Gurren Lagann, as well as anyone who enjoys wistful, character driven space opera with a strong female lead.

Audiences rate the OVA series positively, valuing its kinetic giant-robot action, emotional rivalry between its two heroines, and ambitious cosmic scale despite its short run.
