WATATEN!: an Angel Flew Down to Me (2019) is a Japanese anime sketch comedy series produced by Doga Kobo and broadcast on AT-X. Its twelve short episodes of roughly twenty-four minutes each follow Miyako Hoshino (voice by Reina Ueda), a shy college student who also happens to be an otaku. Her heart races whenever she meets Hana Shirosaki (voice by Maria Sashide), a radiant grade school girl who becomes her little sister's new friend. Miyako keeps trying to get along with Hana and the other bright young girls, including Hinata Hoshino (voice by Rika Nagae) and Noa Himesaka (voice by Akari Kito), but each attempt collapses into flustered awkwardness. Rather than a continuing plot, the show moves through self-contained gags built around that single fraught dynamic. The tone is light, sunny and teasing, with cute-girl charm and self-deprecating humor about fandom and crushes. Viewers who enjoy the gentle school-girl ensemble of Lucky Star, the playful cast of K-On! and the sketch-like rhythm of Azumanga Daioh will find a familiar, easygoing pleasure here. It is a short, undemanding comedy that suits a single evening of cheerful viewing.

Audience reception is mixed, with viewers treating it as a light, quirky anime comedy about a shy otaku's awkward crush on a grade school girl.
