Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts

A sheltered girl gets a crash course in survival when a mutant attack sends her to the surface, far from the safety of her underground home.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts (2020) is an American animated post-apocalyptic adventure series created by Bill Wolkoff and Radford Sechrist for Netflix. Karen Fukuhara voices Kipo, a sheltered girl raised in an underground colony who is thrust onto a mutated surface after an attack, and Sydney Mikayla voices Wolf, a fellow traveler who becomes her companion. Coy Stewart and Deon Cole voice Benson and Dave, further companions navigating a world reshaped by strange wonderbeasts, while Sterling K. Brown voices Lio Oak and Dan Stevens voices Scarlemagne as figures whose ambitions complicate the journey. The engine of the series is Kipo's effort to learn survival skills and find her way in a hostile landscape, where every encounter tests whether kindness can work. Each episode is built around a fresh set of set pieces, creature threats and social tangles that build into a three-season story with a steady forward push. Produced by DreamWorks Animation Television and adapted from a webcomic, the show carries an earnest, hopeful register that refuses to become naive, with action, humor and an unusual musical score. Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Steven Universe and Adventure Time will find resonance in its animated spectacle, found family warmth and gentle moral stakes.

Audiences broadly acclaim the show as a hopeful, action-packed animated adventure whose vivid set pieces and offbeat soundtrack appeal to both kids and adults.
