Mastram

An aspiring author living in the heartland of 1980s India discovers that sex sells when the addition of erotic content to his book finally results in sales.

Mastram (2020) is an Indian Hindi-language comedy drama series created by Harish Vyas for MX Player. Set in 1980s small town India, it follows an aspiring author, Rajaram (Anshuman Jha), who struggles to sell his writing until he discovers that adding erotic content to his book finally brings in buyers. Around him, Madhu (Tara Alisha Berry) and Gopal (Aakash Dabhade) move through the cramped rhythms of a conservative town where private appetites and public morality constantly collide. Each of the ten half-hour episodes builds on the small schemes, embarrassments and near misses that follow Rajaram's ambitions, mixing bawdy farce with a sharper look at provincial hypocrisy. The tone is breezy and satirical, with warmth for its characters and a wry eye on how much a town pretends not to want what it reads. A single self-contained season makes it an easy, light watch. Viewers who enjoy Permanent Roommates and Kota Factory will find a similar mix of youthful ambition and comic embarrassment.

• Permanent Roommatesshared tones of comic coming of age and sexual awakening in small town india, serialized farce
• Tabbarshared satirical comedy about erotic publishing and provincial hypocrisy, period setting
• Kota Factoryshared retro setting and comedic drama about aspiring creatives chasing success
