Peach Boy Riverside

"This is a tale that took place long ago. There once lived an old man and an old woman. The old man went into the woods to cut down some grass and the old woman went to the river to... (You know the rest.) The ogres had finally been defeated, but apparently, there were more ogres living elsewhere, so Peach Boy crossed the sea... It was an amazing feat to defeat the ogres and a joyous feat that Peach Boy saved many lives. But the one thing that went wrong... Was that they had fun. This is nothing more than a "What if"... What if there was more than one peach that tumbled down the river?

Peach Boy Riverside (2021) is a Japanese anime fantasy adventure series aired on TOKYO MX, a single-season run of twelve episodes. Adapted from the manga and built on the Momotaro folktale, it asks what if more than one peach tumbled down the river. Sally, Mikoto, Frau, Hawthorn and Carrot, voiced by Haruka Shiraishi, Nao Toyama, Mao Ichimichi, Toshiki Masuda and Megumi Toda, are drawn into a quest across the sea, where ogres have been defeated once but more are said to be living elsewhere. The engine of the show is a band of companions pursuing monsters through a fantasy world with a playful sense of mischief, and each episode moves through battles, detours and comic misadventures. The tone is breezy and irreverent, with a joyful fondness for folklore that treats a heroic legend as a lark. Its look is bright and kinetic, in the spirit of shonen adventure. Fans of Momotaro Ghost Warriors and Blue Exorcist will find familiar pleasures here, though the series is lighter and more absurd than either.

Audiences rate the series mixed, finding its gleeful reinterpretation of a classic folktale fun but uneven.

• Momotaro Ghost Warriorsshared fantasy action adventure, folklore reimagined as comedic anime
• Blue Exorcistshared Japanese folklore retelling with action-driven fantasy world and anime style
• Kaguya-sama: Love Is Warshared lighthearted reworking of folk tales with youthful cast and quest structure
