What critics said
Critics broadly found Mike Myers’ comic performance and the film’s plentiful gags entertaining, though the sequel’s repetitive, uneven structure produced mixed overall reactions.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Austin, Dr. Evil, the CIA setting, moon cannon, laser weaponry, and retro secret-agent aesthetics all parody classic spy films.
Dr. Evil uses a time machine to remove Austin Powers’ mojo, turning sexual charisma into the story’s central recoverable object.
Austin’s 1960s swinger persona is carried into the late 1990s while the plot repeatedly foregrounds time-baffled behavior and period contrasts.
Dr. Evil proposes a gigantic moon-mounted cannon and cycles through borrowed names such as The Death Star and Alan Parsons’ Project.
