Mortal Kombat: Conquest

Kung Lao has triumphed in the Mortal Kombat tournament, defeating Shang Tsung and saving Earth Realm. Now, he must train a new generation of warriors for the next tournament. Meanwhile, an exiled Shang Tsung attempts to thwart Lao's efforts with the aid of supernatural warriors such as Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

Mortal Kombat: Conquest (1998-1999) is a American syndicated fantasy action series created as a spin-off of the Mortal Kombat video game franchise and aired on TNT and syndication. Paolo Montalban plays Kung Lao, a tournament champion who must train a fresh generation of martial artists for the next battle for Earth Realm. Opposing him is the exiled sorcerer Shang Tsung, played by Bruce Locke, who recruits supernatural warriors including Scorpion and Sub-Zero to undermine Lao's efforts. Daniel Bernhardt and Kristanna Loken appear among the principal fighters, and Jeffrey Meek takes on the god Rayden. The engine of the show is simple: each episode builds around a new threat, a training obstacle or a rival fighter, with fights and sorcery filling most of the runtime. Its single season of 22 episodes was a continuing story rather than a case-of-the-week format, though its fights are the main draw. The look is bright, cheesy and syndication-era, set in a mythic fantasy realm of portals and tournaments rather than any specific historical period. Tone is campy, breezy and action-forward, with a playful sense of fun. Fans of Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and the original Mortal Kombat film will find familiar comfort in its mix of kung fu spectacle and fantastical mythology.

Viewers regard it as a fun, cheesy but action-packed Mortal Kombat spin-off that fans enjoy despite its dated production quality.
