Avatar the Last Airbender

A young boy known as the Avatar must master the four elemental powers to save a world at war — and fight a ruthless enemy bent on stopping him.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024-present) is an American live action fantasy adventure series created by Albert Kim for Netflix. It adapts the beloved animated series into a live action epic. Aang (Gordon Cormier), a young monk and the reincarnated Avatar, must master the four elemental powers of water, earth, fire and air to end a world at war. He travels with Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley), siblings from the Southern Water Tribe, while Zuko (Dallas Liu), a banished Fire Nation prince, hunts him for a chance to restore his honor. Uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) offers wisdom and tea. Each stretch of the journey pairs bending training with fights, escapes and encounters with new communities across a divided land. The series runs as a serialized, season-long adventure across two seasons and fifteen episodes, with a sweeping sense of scale, colorful martial arts action and a warm, earnest tone. Its heart lies in found family and the weight of inherited duty. Fans of the original animated series, along with viewers of The Dragon Prince and The Wheel of Time, will find resonance here.

Critics find the live action adaptation a decent but uneven reworking of the animated original, with a promising first season and a weaker, more divisive second season.
