Legend of the Galactic Heroes

War rages between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. With two new brilliant young leaders at the helm, anything can happen in this military space opera.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes (1988-1997) is a Japanese anime space opera adapted from a novel series, produced by Artland and Production I.G across four seasons and 110 episodes. Its engine is a long war between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance, told through two brilliant young commanders: the ambitious Reinhard von Lohengramm (Ryo Horikawa), who wants to remake the Empire by force, and the reluctant strategist Wen-li Yang (Kei Tomiyama), who would rather win through reason than bloodshed. Supporting principals include Siegfried Kircheis (Masashi Hironaka), Wolfgang Mittermeyer (Katsuji Mori) and Oskar von Reuenthal (Norio Wakamoto), whose loyalties and rivalries drive fleet campaigns, backroom councils and shifting alliances. Each episode weighs battlefield maneuvers against court politics, so the story reads as a sprawling chess match among admirals and statesmen. Set in an invented interstellar future, the series moves with a measured, unhurried pace and a cerebral, melancholic register, with a sense that power corrupts and that ordinary soldiers pay the price. Fans of Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5 and Mobile Suit Gundam will find the same mix of epic fleet warfare and political philosophy. Its long, deliberate arc rewards patient viewers.

Widely acclaimed among audiences as a landmark of military space opera, praised for its political depth, strategic storytelling and memorable rivalry between its two commanders.
