Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple

Yeah, Kenichi’s a total wimp. He’s always getting picked on and doesn’t have a lot of friends to stick up for him. The guy needs motivation if he hopes to graduate in one piece. Well, Miu’s the perfect motivation. She’s hot, she accepts him, and she just so happens to live at a dojo with six martial arts masters. You could say fate has led Kenichi to their door, or you could say he was just following the hottie. Either way, he’s about to get whipped into serious shape. If he can survive some hard-core training, he might survive another day at school. He might even score with Miu. Yeah, you could call Kenichi a wimp. But let’s go with underdog instead.

Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple (2006-2007) is a Japanese animated martial arts comedy series created as a TV Tokyo broadcast anime produced by TMS Entertainment, based on the manga of the same name. Bullied high school wimp Kenichi Shirahama finds his life redirected when he follows the attractive Miu Fūrinji to the dojo where she lives with six martial arts masters. Among them are Akisame Kōetsuji, who takes on his training, and Shio Sakaki. Each episode is built around grueling training sessions, comic escalation, and a steady run of rival fighters and set-piece bouts, with Kenichi's romantic hopes fueling every painful workout. Across a single 50-episode season, the series is a light-hearted shonen fight show with brisk pacing and an upbeat, self-deprecating tone. Its underdog arc and playful sense of humor give it a warm, accessible feel. Fans of Dragon Ball Z, Naruto and Ranma ½ will find a familiar blend of training montages, martial arts spectacle and romantic comedy here.

Viewers generally find it an energetic, lighthearted underdog martial arts comedy adapted from its manga, though it is not widely praised beyond its fan base.
