Overview
Zim dreams of greatness. Unfortunately, though, he's hopelessly inept as a space invader. Desperate to be rid of the annoying Zim, his planet's leaders send him on a mission to infiltrate Earth, providing him with leftover, cobbled-together equipment. To their consternation, Zim succeeds in setting up a base on Earth and infiltrating human culture, posing as a human child as he plots the planet's downfall. Only Zim's archnemesis, Dib, recognizes that Zim is an alien, and of course, nobody believes Dib's claims.
Invader ZIM (2001-2006) is an American animated science fiction comedy created by Jhonen Vasquez for Nickelodeon. Zim, a grandiose but hopelessly inept alien voiced by Richard Steven Horvitz, is dispatched by his superiors with leftover, cobbled-together equipment to conquer Earth. He sets up a base and poses as a human child at an ordinary school, plotting the planet's downfall while his blunt robot companion GIR (Rosearik Rikki Simons) causes chaos. His archnemesis Dib (Andy Berman) is the only person who recognizes Zim for what he is, and nobody believes him. Each episode is a short, brisk caper built from failed schemes, gadget mishaps, and sharp classroom and household collisions with the human characters. Across two seasons and forty-six episodes, the series keeps a single running thread of rivalry and escalation without a rigid case structure. Its tone mixes manic slapstick with a mean, misanthropic streak and a surprisingly dark, graphic edge for a children's channel, giving it a cult following. Fans of Futurama, Ren & Stimpy and Recess will find a similar mix of irreverent absurdism and outsider comedy. Set in present-day American suburbia, it is an early-2000s cartoon with a cynical, anarchic heart.
What critics said
