A Pup Named Scooby-Doo

The world's favorite chicken-hearted canine, as a puppy? That's right! And the old gang is back with him. Shaggy, Daphne, Velma, and Freddy are all here as gangly kids — goofing off, solving kid-size mysteries, and having run-ins with ghouls, ghosts, and goblins.

A Pup Named Scooby-Doo (1988-1991) is an American animated mystery comedy series created by Tom Ruegger for ABC, produced by Hanna-Barbera Cartoons. It runs four seasons and thirty episodes, and it is a prequel spin off that rewinds the franchise to childhood. Scooby-Doo appears as a puppy, and the gangly young versions of Shaggy Rogers (voiced by Casey Kasem), Daphne Blake (voiced by Kellie Martin), Velma Dinkley (voiced by Christina Lange) and Fred Jones (voiced by Carl Steven) goof around and take on kid-size mysteries. Each episode is a self-contained case of the week in which the gang runs into ghouls, ghosts and goblins, then unmasks a mundane culprit with the playful logic of the original franchise. The engine is simple: a puppy's appetite, a group of friends' curiosity, and the small stakes of childhood. The tone is gentle, goofy and breezy, with spooky trappings that never truly frighten. Its episodic structure, bright Saturday morning animation and kid-friendly comedy make it a natural fit for fans of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! and The New Scooby-Doo Movies, as well as viewers who enjoy Tiny Toon Adventures. Families and young children will find it an easy, warm watch.

Audiences rated the series mixed, with its early season praised for bringing the classic gang back as kids.
