Iria: Zeiram the Animation

Iria is the story of a girl and the Alien being she loves to hate. The series begins with her brother, Gren, taking a job. He is a bounty hunter, and one well known for his incredible skill. Iria, being a skilled apprentice bounty hunter herself, tags along. What is the job, one might ask. It is to find out what has happened to the crew and cargo of a Space Station. Needless to say, nothing is as it seems, and the war between Iria and Zeiram begins in earnest.

Iria: Zeiram the Animation (1994) is a Japanese anime science fiction action series produced by Ashi Productions and released as a six-episode original video animation. The story follows Iria, a skilled apprentice bounty hunter who tags along with her celebrated older brother Gren (Jurota Kosugi) on a job to uncover what happened to the crew and cargo of a space station. Iria (Aya Hisakawa) is the driving presence, and the creature Zeiram (Wataru Takagi) is the alien threat at the center of the hunt. Each brisk 29-minute episode keeps the investigation tight, with supporting characters such as Bob (Masaru Ikeda) and Kei (Mika Kanai) adding companionship and friction. Nothing unfolds the way it first appears, and the sibling partnership gives the action a playful edge alongside its menace. The atmosphere is brash and energetic, with a sense of rivalry and fixation between hunter and prey driving every confrontation. Shape and scale are compact: a single self-contained story told in six episodes. Fans of Cowboy Bebop, Bubblegum Crisis and Alien will find resonance in its blend of space bounty hunting, creature peril and 1990s anime style.
