Adventures of Captain Vrungel

An old sea captain and his student decide to take part in the international regatta. At the same time an amateur thief steals a statue of Aphrodite from Louvre and boards their yacht by mistake. A long, fun adventure is ahead.

Adventures of Captain Vrungel (1980) is a Soviet animated adventure series produced for Central Television USSR, adapted from a classic Russian novel. Its engine is simple and charming: the eccentric old sea captain Vrungel and his young student set out to compete in an international regatta, but their voyage is repeatedly derailed by trouble. An amateur thief who has stolen a statue of Aphrodite from the Louvre boards their yacht by mistake, and the chaos draws in a pair of gangsters along with a superagent. Each short episode is a self-contained burst of slapstick pursuit, mistaken identity and nautical mishap rather than a demanding continuing plot. The single season is light, brisk and warmly comic, with a cheerful mood and a sense of playful absurdity running throughout. Its tone is breezy and whimsical, and its loose, sea-going capers recall the animated comedy of Tintin and the family caper films of Soviet children's television. Fans of Nu, pogodi! and classic European animated adventure will find a similar spirit of gentle, fast-moving fun in this vintage seafaring romp.
