The Quintessential Quintuplets

Fuutarou Uesugi is a poor, antisocial ace student who one day meets the rich transfer student Itsuki Nakano. They argue but when Uesugi realizes he is to be her tutor, he tries to get on better terms. While trying to do so he meets four other girls.

The Quintessential Quintuplets (2019-2021) is a Japanese animated romantic comedy series produced by Tezuka Productions and Bibury Animation Studios, broadcast on TBS. Across two seasons and twenty-four episodes, it follows Fuutarou Uesugi, a poor, antisocial ace student who reluctantly becomes the private tutor of Itsuki Nakano, a wealthy transfer student who starts out arguing with him. As he tries to earn her trust, he meets her four identical quintuplet sisters, Ichika, Nino, Miku and Yotsuba, each with her own personality and her own hidden feelings. The engine of the show is simple and warm: each episode is a tutoring session, a school event or a small domestic mishap that pushes Fuutarou to get closer to the sisters while they test each other's loyalties. Voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Kana Hanazawa among others, the cast gives the sisters distinct voices that make them easy to tell apart. The tone is light, cozy and affectionate, with awkward humor and gentle romantic tension set in a present-day Japanese high school. Fans of Toradora!, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War and Rent-A-Girlfriend will find the same mix of school life, romantic rivalry and playful banter here.

Viewers broadly find the series warm, funny and romantically charming, with a rewarding payoff for its central romance.
