We Never Learn

Nariyuki Yuiga is in his last and most painful year of high school. In order to gain the “special VIP recommendation” which would grant him a full scholarship to college, he must now tutor his classmates as they struggle to prepare for entrance exams. Among his pupils are “the sleeping beauty of the literary forest,” Fumino Furuhashi, and "the Thumbelina supercomputer," Rizu Ogata–two of the most beautiful super-geniuses at the school! While these two were thought to be academically flawless, it turns out that they’re completely clueless outside of their pet subjects…!?

We Never Learn: BOKUBEN (2019) is a Japanese animated school romantic comedy produced for TOKYO MX and regional Japanese broadcasters, adapted from a manga and presented as a two-season, twenty-six-episode anime. Nariyuki Yuiga, voiced by Ryota Osaka, is a high school senior whose scholarship hinges on tutoring his struggling classmates for entrance exams. His pupils include Fumino Furuhashi, voiced by Haruka Shiraishi, and Rizu Ogata, voiced by Miyu Tomita, two celebrated super-geniuses who turn out to be helpless outside their pet subjects. The engine of each episode is the gap between their polished reputations and their everyday ineptitude, played out in study sessions, exam pressure, and the rivalries of a crowded cast. Set in a contemporary Japanese high school, the show moves at a brisk pace through lighthearted comic setups and escalating romantic tension. Its tone is breezy, playful, and affectionate, with a harem-style ensemble and a steady stream of gentle mishaps. Fans of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Horimiya, and Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai will find similar pleasures in its school-life romance and comic misunderstandings.

Audiences rate the series as mixed-to-positive, valuing its comedic take on the harem and romcom format while finding its romantic premise familiar.
