The Irresponsible Captain Tylor

Justy Ueki Tylor had his life all planned out: join the military, get a cushy desk job, and then retire with a big fat pension check. The perfect plan... until he wandered into a hostage situation and somehow managed to save an admiral! Now Tylor - a man who wouldn't know what discipline was if it bit him on the backside - has been made Captain of the space cruiser Soyokaze. The crew of this run-down ship is the craziest rag-tag team of misfits you're ever likely to see, and they're not too fond of their complacent new leader. But they'd better learn to work together, because they're about to go head to head with the mighty Raalgon Empire. For better or for worse, the Earth's fate has been placed in the hands of a man who's either a total idiot - or an absolute genius!

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor (1993) is a Japanese animated space comedy series created by Hitoshi Yoshioka, produced by Tatsunoko Production and Studio Deen and broadcast on TV Tokyo. Justy Ueki Tylor, a man who dreams only of a cushy desk job and a comfortable pension, becomes an accidental hero after he wanders into a hostage standoff and saves an admiral. Promoted to captain of the run-down space cruiser Soyokaze, he must win over a crew of eccentric misfits who openly resent his lazy, undisciplined manner. The engine of the show is the gap between his slacker instincts and the brutal responsibility of defending Earth against the mighty Raalgon Empire. Each episode mixes ship-life gags, crew friction, and fleet skirmishes with the Raalgon, building a single season of twenty-six episodes. Cast includes Koji Tsujitani as Tylor and Hiroko Kasahara as Azalyn. Its tone is breezy and irreverent, with a warm underdog heart and a parody of heroic military tropes. Fans of Space Battleship Yamato, Dirty Pair and Gunbuster will find resonance in its blend of space opera and sly comedy, and anime fans of the era will recognize its light-hearted approach to galactic war.
