More about the show
Overview
Oreki Houtarou is a minimalistic high school boy. One day, he joins the Classic Literature Club at his elder sister's request. There he meets Chitanda Eru, Fukube Satoshi, and Ibara Mayaka. Chitanda is a calm beautiful girl but she turns into an embodiment of curiosity once she says, "I'm curious." Fukube is a smiling boy with a fantastic memory who calls himself a database. Ibara is a short girl and is strict with others and herself. They begin to investigate a case that occurred 45 years ago. Hints of the mystery are buried in an old collection of works of the former members of Classics Club. The collection is titled "Hyouka."
Hyouka (2012) is a Japanese animated mystery series produced by Kyoto Animation for Chiba TV, adapted from a light novel. Oreki Houtarou, a deliberately minimalistic high school boy voiced by Yuichi Nakamura, joins the Classic Literature Club at his elder sister's request and finds himself investigating a case that began forty-five years earlier. He works alongside the calm but suddenly fiercely curious Eru Chitanda (voiced by Satomi Sato), the walking-encyclopedia Satoshi Fukube (Daisuke Sakaguchi), and the strict Mayaka Ibara (Ai Kayano). The engine is simple and rewarding: small everyday puzzles, a few words in an old club collection, and a mystery that unfolds one clue at a time across a single season of twenty-two episodes. Each episode is a self-contained case of small-town school life, grounded in the rhythms of a Japanese high school. The tone is gentle and wry, with humor, quiet romantic undercurrents, and a wistful sense of youth. Fans of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Ouran High School Host Club will find resonance in its lightly comic school setting and understated sleuthing. The series is a comfortable, thoughtful watch for anyone who enjoys careful deduction wrapped in warm, unhurried character moments.
