My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU

So exactly what’s going to happen when Hachiman Hikigaya, an isolated high school student with no friends, no interest in making any and a belief that everyone else’s supposedly great high school experiences are either delusions or outright lies, is coerced by a well meaning faculty member into joining the one member “Volunteer Services Club” run by Yukino Yukinoshita, who’s smart, attractive and generally considers everyone in her school to be her complete inferior?

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU (2013-2020) is a Japanese animated slice of life series created for TBS, adapted from a light novel and produced by the Brain's Base studio. It follows Hachiman Hikigaya, a high school student who insists that everyone's supposedly great school experiences are fake, until a teacher forces him into the Volunteer Services Club. There he works alongside the composed, intimidating Yukino Yukinoshita and the warm, eager Yui Yuigahama, and the three take on small favors and requests that expose their guarded personalities. Each episode turns on a social problem handled with a mix of deadpan narration and awkward humor, while the show gradually builds into a larger story about sincerity, pretense, and what honest connection costs. Its tone blends cringe comedy with wistful, reflective drama, and its wry inner monologue keeps the mood sharp and self-deprecating. Across three seasons and thirty-eight episodes, the series grows more emotionally layered. Fans of Welcome to the NHK, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, and Bakemonogatari will find resonance in its cynical protagonist and its blend of romantic tension and social satire.

Viewers broadly regard the series as a sharp, unconventional take on the high school romance genre, praised for its sardonic protagonist and emotionally layered character work.
