Tonari no Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time

In the middle of class at a certain school, Rumi Yokoi, a diligent student, has her in-class life turned upside down when her desk mate Toshinari Seki begins to play by himself at his desk in class. Although Rumi is irked by Toshinari's distracting yet intricate playtime, she finds herself being drawn into his interesting hobby. Never being able to focus, Rumi observes Seki's stunning ways of slacking off in class.

Tonari no Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time (2014) is a Japanese animated slice of life comedy adapted from a manga and produced by Shin-Ei Animation for TV Tokyo and affiliated stations. Across a single season of twenty-one seven-minute episodes, diligent student Rumi Yokoi (voiced by Kana Hanazawa) finds her concentration shattered when her desk mate Toshinari Seki (voiced by Hiro Shimono) begins playing an intricate private game at his desk during lessons. Rumi is irritated by the distraction yet keeps getting pulled into his inventive ways of slacking off, while the supporting classmates and teachers drift in and out of each short vignette. The engine is simple and character-driven: a standard school day becomes a stage for small, escalating schemes that a viewer watches with a grin. Each episode is self-contained, so the series suits brief viewing sessions. The tone is breezy, deadpan and gently absurd, with a warm affection for everyday classroom boredom. Fans of Nichijou and other Japanese school comedies will find the same playful rhythm and offbeat charm here, with a light, observational touch that rewards patience and close attention to Seki's tiny rituals.

Viewers rate the series positively, appreciating its light, witty take on classroom boredom and Seki's inventive daydreaming.
